Let Them Eat Cake!

food & drink

15 Jan

This infamous, though likely apocryphal, line is attributed to Marie Antoinette. It does make you want a slice of cake, or a bite-sized petit four, or an almondy financier. A petit four literally means “little oven,” and is an exquisitely decorated tiny bite of cake with frosting. Pronounced ... Read More about Let Them Eat Cake!

Angelina Paris

Angelina is certainly no secret, but when you step in this gold-and-mirrored “salon de thé” on the rue de Rivoli in Paris, you will immediately feel like you’ve found something special. You have! Le Nouvel An (The New Year)

Paris is especially lovely around Christmas and New Year’s. The trees along the Champs-Élysées are lit with twinkle lights. The big department stores have lacey lights on every surface of each building, the insides of the stores have beautiful oversized decorations, and the window displays are a ... Joyeux Noël

Each year I love to decorate my home for Christmas, or as the French would say Joyeux Noël! Over the years my decorations have evolved into a French and Santa theme, a whimsical mix of McKenzie-Childs Christmas and French accessories, ornaments, ribbons, and gift boxes. The final touch is a ... There’s nothing better than a party among friends and family with a fun cocktail in hand. Cocktails such as the cranberry champagne cocktail from Bon Appetit magazine is among my favorite. It’s delicious, festive, easy to make, and a real crowd-pleaser. While this is an obvious choice ... Karen Allen

Karen at Point Zéro on her first trip to France in 1997

When I can’t be in France to enjoy the cuisine, historical landmarks, architecture, gardens museums, art, and friends, I am either reading or dreaming about it. Or, I am planning my next holiday itinerary! My first trip to Europe was in 1997. I stayed in a timeshare exchange a half-hour train ride from Paris. No one could go with me, so I headed to France by myself. My friend Daniel Hudry, a French chef who lived in Paris, was the only person I knew. Daniel stayed with me and my family in Albany, Oregon, during one of the stops on his Rotary International Exchange. After that week in France, I fell in love with all things French.
