Le Muguet

1 May

May 1, or le premier mai, is the official start of spring in France. The French have celebrated the beginning of this season for centuries by giving each other sprigs of Lily of the Valley, or le Muguet, a fragrant and delicate bell-shaped flower. You will see these being sold on many street corners ... Read More about Le Muguet

French Comfort Food

You might be surprised to know that the French have comfort food! Many French dishes are elegant and sophistiqué, but they also love a warm bowl of pasta and cheese with ham on a cold or rainy evening. It’s not all canapés and roast duck! Karen Allen

Karen at Point Zéro on her first trip to France in 1997

When I can’t be in France to enjoy the cuisine, historical landmarks, architecture, gardens museums, art, and friends, I am either reading or dreaming about it. Or, I am planning my next holiday itinerary! My first trip to Europe was in 1997. I stayed in a timeshare exchange a half-hour train ride from Paris. No one could go with me, so I headed to France by myself. My friend Daniel Hudry, a French chef who lived in Paris, was the only person I knew. Daniel stayed with me and my family in Albany, Oregon, during one of the stops on his Rotary International Exchange. After that week in France, I fell in love with all things French.
