Bonne Année à Tous!
(Happy New Year to All!)
Now that it is January and all the decorations are put away, we all can take a deep breath and relax a little. We are thinking back on the Holiday Season filled with many events shared with friends and family. Our grand children were the highlight. Terre has a four-year grand daughter and I have two grandsons, a three year old and the newest was born right before Thanksgiving.
Terre and I kicked off December with a tree cutting party with 24 friends. After a fun afternoon in pursuit of the “perfect tree” at our friends farm, we met back at my home for “Beef Bourguignon” served from a Staub “cow” cocotte or dutch oven, orange salad with a blood orange balsamic vinaigrette and French bread from our local French bakery, “Le Patissier”. Followed by a delicious French frozen chocolate mint torte made by one our girlfriends.
This was the first year I started putting up my Christmas decorations the middle of November, the only remaining item left was the tree. Everyone was surprised when they arrived for the party (including my family when they arrived for Thanksgiving dinner!) Later that week we presented our French Inspirations for Holiday Entertaining event at the Williams Sonoma Store located at 338 NW 23rd Street in Portland, Oregon. It was a stormy night and Blazer basketball game traffic through out the city. In spite of all the obstacles in getting there we all had a good time. Here are a few ideas we shared with our guests:
French inspirations for decorating your home:
- Freeze dried boxwood letters
- Eiffel tower with battery operated lights in floral arrangements
- Mixing ribbons with the leaves for texture in a bouquet
- Candle holders for floral containers
- Glass and silver plated cloches to cover napkins or gifts for guests
- Use french wrapping paper to wrap gifts
- Fold napkins into a rose shape to match rose floral arrangement
- Use French Christmas tags for place cards
- Turn flatware place setting upside down
- Accent dining chairs with lumbar pillows
My Christmas tree is French inspired and I had purchased many new ornaments this year. I started buying them in September. If you wait too long they will be sold out. My favorite places to find French ornaments are:

We celebrated New Years with friends dining at Restaurant Beck located at the Whale Cove Hotel just south of Depot Bay on the Oregon Coast. Our evening started with a bottle of champagne opened by my husband with a Laquiole champagne saber. This is always a crowd pleaser!
Karen and Terre wish for you a wonderful 2015!
